Use the jag with a dry patch to wipe away excess solvent, oil or fouling. A few drops of oil on a clean patch after cleaning will provide a nice, thin, even layer of oil on you bore to prevent corrosion whilst firearm is not being used.
Note:  .243 & .50 BMG are brass jags.
